TSW Announces New Principal Editor for Aging Domain
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Rudolph E. Tanzi, Ph.D. as Principal Editor for TheScientificWorldJOURNAL’s Aging domain. Dr. Tanzi has been investigating the molecular genetics of human neurodegenerative disease since 1980 when he participated in the pioneering study at Massachusetts General Hospital that led to location of the Huntington''s disease gene, the first disease gene to be localized solely by genetic linkage analysis. Since 1982, Dr. Tanzi has focused his studies on Alzheimer''s disease (AD), working on the isolation of several genes that play a key role.
Dr. Tanzi’s laboratory also first discovered that the metals zinc and copper are necessary for the formation of neurotoxic assemblies of the peptide called Ab, the main component of ß-amyloid deposits in brains of AD patients. These studies have led to ongoing clinical trials for treating and preventing AD by targeting Aß-metal interactions. Most recently, Dr. Tanzi has been investigating the biochemical mechanisms by which defects in the known AD genes cause neurodegeneration in AD and endeavoring to translate these findings into novel therapies to treat and prevent AD. Dr. Tanzi is also carrying out genome wide association screens to identify novel genes associated with late-onset AD and autism spectrum disorders.
Dr. Tanzi is the Chairman, Cure Alzheimer’s Fund Research Consortium, a Fellow of the AAAS, and serves on the Board of Scientific Counselors for the National Institute of Aging. He serves on over three dozen editorial boards, has given numerous honorary lectures, coauthored over 300 research articles and has received several awards for his work including the two highest awards given for research in Alzheimer’s disease. He is co-inventor on 18 issued patents and has co-founded two biotech companies, both of which are developing novel therapeutics for treating AD. He is currently a Professor of Neurology (and Neuroscience) at Harvard University, and serves as the Director of the Genetics and Aging Research Unit consisting of eight laboratories in the MassGeneral Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases at MGH.
