Synopsis: Essential tremor (ET) is a common neurological disease, affecting 4% of the population aged 40 and older. Aside from inherited factors, environmental exposures are likely to play a role in disease causation. This report reviews the literature that putatively links exposure to the chemical harmane with ET. Identification of such disease-associated toxins is an important initial step towards reducing exposure and lessening the occurrence of disease.

Synopsis: We investigated the nitrate, sulfate, total dissolved solid, electrical conductivity, total hardness, and bicarbonates of rainwater samples collected from Warri and Port Harcourt (oil-producing), and Awka (non-oil producing as control), between April–June, July–August, and September–October of 2005 and 2006 to depict the onset of the rainy season, mid-rainy season, and end of rainy season for the two major crude oil–producing cities of the Niger Delta region of Nigeria (although Port Harcourt is also noted for non-oil manufacturing industries). Anthropogenic activities in the Niger Delta impacted on the inorganic ion pollution of the rainwater. This may have serious public health implications in the region.

Synopsis: Advanced age is associated with various modifications in all cell types of the innate immune system, contributing to increased morbidity and mortality. This article highlights age-related changes of polymorphonuclear neutrophils and gives an overview about the newest literature. It shows that traditional neutrophil functions are disturbed, mainly due to disrupted signaling pathways. A deeper insight into the nature of these defects may allow the development of therapeutic strategies to restore neutrophil functioning in the elderly.

Synopsis: This review explores the role that melanocortin peptides and their receptors play in modulating the host inflammatory response. It gives an insight into where these peptides are produced, the location of these receptors, and the inflammatory diseases in which they have been shown to be beneficial. The review also aims to highlight some of the recent advances in developing nonpeptidic melanocortin compounds, which may be beneficial in future drug discovery.

Synopsis: As the elderly are a particularly vulnerable group, obesity and its complications may lead to disability and so it has been changed to a major health concern in this age group. This study dealt mainly with socioeconomic factors that affect overweight and obesity. Results may help health care providers to understand more about socioeconomic factors and their association with overweight and obesity.

Synopsis: Progress in AIDS treatment leads to declining morbidity and mortality among patients. High therapy adherence levels are required in order to attain said objectives. This study correlated therapy adherence to epidemiologic and treatment characteristics of 46 HIV-infected adolescents. Lower viral loads and lesser numbers of antiretroviral schemes were found among top therapy-adherence patients.

Synopsis: An association exists between visceral obesity, androgen deficiency, endothelial dysfunction, and erectile dysfunction (ED); however, the causal relationship between these variables remains unknown. Obesity reduces testosterone levels, resulting in a hypogonadal state, and increases risk of ED. The pathophysiological mechanisms linking obesity with reduced testosterone levels and ED require further investigation. We suggest that visceral obesity contributes to androgen deficiency and increases the risk of ED.

Synopsis: The article by Lauder et al (TheScientificWorldJournal (2009) 9 349-359) provides an analysis of the results of treatment for end-stage kidney disease in Italy and explores the possible reasons for the excellent outcomes. The results in Spain are also better than in the United States even if they fall below the outcomes reported in Italy. The explanation for better outcomes seems to rest with better management and care.

Synopsis: For reasons that are not entirely clear, the mortality rate of ESRD patients in the United States exceeds twenty percent per year, whereas in western European countries, the yearly mortality rate is about twelve percent. This difference is striking given the resources and expenses associated with ESRD in the United States. We sought to examine the Italian renal care system by means of an electronic survey to help identify delivery of care aspects that contribute to improved mortality outcomes in ESRD patients.
