Synopsis: |
Progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC) is a group of autosomal-recessive disorders. Genomic DNA analysis of two brothers, affected with PFIC type 3, show homozygosity for mutations in the human MDR3 gene with heterozygosity of nonconsanguineous parents. The presence of mutations in the human MDR3 gene has been previously described only in siblings of consanguineous parents. |

Synopsis: |
This article reviews the available literature on lipoxins and aspirin-triggered lipoxins (ATL). These eicosanoids are emerging as pivotal break signals of inflammation and promoters of resolution. Their biosynthetic pathways, bioactions, and involvement in human disease are discussed, as well as their potential use as a new class of anti-inflammatory drugs. |

Synopsis: |
Execution of a perfectly balanced acute inflammatory/reparative response is nowhere as critical and conserved as in the delicate visual axis, as uncontrolled inflammation impairs vision and leads to blindness. In this regard, lipid autacoid circuits have emerged as key components of endogenous pathways that preserve ocular function and limit the sequelae of ocular injury. This review summarizes the current state of the field regarding the protective endogenous lipid circuits in the ocular/inflammatory response. |

Synopsis: |
PTHrP is a polyhormone undergoing proteolytic processing and its midregion domain, (38-94)-amide, causes striking toxicity and accelerates death of breast cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. Midregion PTHrP can also be imported in cell nucleoplasm and in vitro it can bind chromatin of metaphase spread preparations and also isolated oligonucleotides, thereby appearing endowed with a putative transcription factor–like DNA-binding ability. This review summarizes the data so far produced in this field. |

Synopsis: |
The regulation of cell cycle entry is critical for cell proliferation and tumorigenesis. One of the key players regulating cell cycle progression is the F-box protein Skp2. Overexpression of Skp2 is associated with a variety of human cancers, indicating that Skp2 may contribute to the development of human cancers. The notion is supported by various genetic mouse models that demonstrate an oncogenic activity of Skp2 and its requirement in cancer progression, suggesting that Skp2 may be a novel and attractive therapeutic target for cancers. |

Synopsis: |
Using the technologies of digital microfluidics, recombinant enzyme technology, and magnetic nanoparticles, we have created a functional prototype of an artificial Golgi organelle. Work is currently under way to develop and integrate an artificial endoplasmic reticulum for on-chip synthesis of proteoglycans and glycoproteins. |

Synopsis: |
We present unique data of selenium supplementation in children and adolescents with autoimmune thyroiditis. The effect of selenium supplementation in this autoimmune condition has not been studied in children and adolescents so far. We feel that publishing negative results is important, especially in controversial therapies. In addition, we present data on the prevalence of goiter in autoimmune thyroiditis and on levothyroxine doses needed to treat autoimmune hypothyroidism. Such data do not exist in the literature so far. |

Synopsis: |
Cancer cases among the population in the developing world are on the increase, which may be linked to exposures to xenobiotics. Solid waste dumps are scattered along the banks of water bodies with occasional burning in an attempt to reduce the waste size, which may introduce polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) into these water bodies. This study investigated the levels, distribution, and risk assessment of PAHs in some water bodies along the coastal belt of Ghana. |
